Social Action

We’re excited to kick off the 2010-2011 B’nai Torah Social Action Committee Happenings this summer! This year, the SAC will dedicate its efforts to strengthening our community in the following areas:

Tikkun Okam – Repairing the World

Projects will include bettering our community with hands-on activities and learning about how we can reduce our carbon footprint. Whether it’s helping till the land of the new B’nai Torah Gan, working to build new homes in our city, or participating in a clean-up day at the Dunwoody Nature Center, there’s something for everyone!

Tzedekah and Feeding the Hungry

Projects will include making sandwiches throughout the summer for area children, creating back-to-school boxes for kids at Lake Forest Elementary, and collecting canned food on a regular basis for Operation Isaiah.

Caring for the Sick

Our first project will give kids at B’nai Torah the opportunity to tie dye scarves for children with cancer so they can have something colorful to wear when they lose their hair. We’ll also be doing some other unique projects this year to help care for the sick in our community.

Sundays in July – July 11, 18, 25, 2010 - PB&J in Your PJs - 11am-12 pm at B’nai Torah

Before you head to the pool, grab the kids (in their PJs) and join us for a fun hour of making PB&J sandwiches for kids in need.

What to bring? Bag of KOSHER (OU  or Chaf K) bread or a package of small sandwich baggies.

Sunday, August 8 , 2010 – Back to School Mitzvah Day -- 10am-12pm

Join us at B’nai Torah for a fulfilling morning of social action and mitzvah projects to kick off the school year! Most activities will take place at the Synagogue.

What to bring? Your empty shoeboxes and any new back to school supplies that can fit inside. Need ideas? The dollar store has great deals on packages of pencils, erasers, notepads and other fun school box stuffers!

Sunday, October 3, 2010 – Fall Mitzvah Day – 10am-12 pm

Our fall Mitzvah Day will be held at B’nai Torah and at various locations around Atlanta. Stay tuned for more details!

What to bring? We’ll let you know as the day gets closer!

Operation Isaiah:

Keep your canned goods handy. This year our goal is to fill every Operation Isaiah bin to the brim! We’ll be hosting drives to collect canned goods on the following dates:

Sunday, Sept 12-Friday, Sept 12 (End of Rosh Hashanah thru Kol Nidre)

Thursday, October 30 - Simchat Torah

Hanukkah  - December 1-9

Purim, 2011 – Sunday and Monday, March 20/21, 2011

Pre-Passover, 2011 – Sunday, April 10 - Sunday, April 17th

What to bring? Your canned goods! Keep them in your car or make a quick stop by the shul anytime we host our drives!

Want to get involved but don’t know how?

We love our Social Action Committee Volunteers! Whether you can give us time on a Sunday or bring canned goods to Shul, please visit our Facebook Group (search for B’nai Torah on Facebook) and sign up to find out what’s going on! We encourage all ages to join us at our Mitzvah Days or other events throughout the year. If you have questions or other projects you’d like to list and recruit volunteers, contact Adina Neufeld at adinaneufeld@yahoo.com.
